What Are The Advantages Of An Amature Sports Team Registering As A 503c?

We have an amature sports team that competes in a local league. The parents pay into a fund to cover facility costs, coaching costs, tournament expenses and the other costs of running the team. Should we just get a fed ID number and go on our way or set up a 503C?
